With more vehicles on the road than ever and often treacherous winter weather conditions, those who travel during this busy time of year also are encouraged to exercise caution.
There are steps you can take to protect you and your family as you navigate through the hustle and bustle of the season. This winter, take a look at a few simple safety tips recommended:
- Always make sure your vehicle is in peak driving conditions before traveling
- Be sure all tires are inflated properly
- Always wear your seat belt
- Avoid driving while fatigued
- Follow weather reports closely before traveling long distances
- Always delay traveling when bad weather is forecasted
- When traveling, do not use cruise control when driving on a wet, icy or sandy surface
- Increase the distance between cars when following others to eight to 10 seconds instead of the standard three to four
- Do not power up hills, especially on snow-covered roads
- If driving in the snow, be sure to accelerate and decelerate slowly
- If you become snow-bound, stay inside of your vehicle
